Chapter 14: Questions for Discussion

1.) What does Hester now say about her scarlet letter to Chillingworth?
The Scarlet letter will always be present inside her; it makes her who she is. She will not take it off; it will come off when it is ready. “Were it worthy to be quit of it, it would fall away of its own nature, or be transformed into something that should speak a different purport” (153)

2.) Describe Chillingworth physically.
Chillingworth “wore his age well” and “seemed to retain a wirey vigor and alertness.” Chillingworth was eager and fierce, but tried to hide his identity with a smile. Hester saw a red light from his eyes, as if his soul were on fire. “Roger Chillingworth was a striking evidence of man’s faculty of transforming himself into a devil” (153).

3.) What do we find out Dimmesdale’s true "death" is, and how does he suffer it?
Every day Dimmesdale is dying. Chillingworth has kept him alive, this allows him to torture Dimmesdale all the time, “Your clutch is on his life, and you cause him to die daily a living death; and still he knows you not” (154).

4.) Describe exactly how Chillingworth has treated Dimmesdale and why he has treated him that way.
He has control over every aspect of his life. Chillingworth wanted him to live, so could torture him, “But for my aid, his life would have burned away in torments, within the first two years after the perpetration of his crime and thine” (155). If Dimmesdale died, Chillingworth would not have a chance to get revenge and cause him to suffer.

5.) Why has Dimmesdale increased his debt to Chillingworth?
As a result of Dimmesdale, Chillingworth has become a different person, “No life had been more peaceful and innocent than mine; few lives so rich with benefits conferred” (156). Dimmesdale has brought the worst out in him. He no longer does things for good.

6.) Is Chillingworth’s argument valid about that point?
Chillingworth has become an evil person, but he chose to be. He decided to devout his life to torturing Dimmesdale, “His fame, his position, his life, will be in my hands. Beware!" (71)

7.) What is the final resolution between Hester and Chillingworth? Is there one?
There is no resolution between Hester and Chillingworth. Chillingworth refuses to stop seeking revenge. He believes they committed a serious sin, and must live with the consequences. Their fate will decide their future, “Let the black flower blossom as it may!” (157)

The Scarlet Letter 6: 126-144

“But this very burden it was that gave him sympathies so intimate with the sinful brotherhood of mankind, so that his heart vibrated in unison with theirs, and received their pain into itself, and sent its own throb of pain through a thousand other hearts, in gushes of sad, persuasive eloquence.” (129)

Dimmesdale’s sin is burning inside himself. He wants to tell so badly, but he cannot. If he confesses, everything he stands for will be disregarded. When Dimmesdale discusses his sins in his sermons, the people believe he is holier. Since everyone believes Dimmesdale is just being humble, he feels guiltier. Dimmesdale is tortured and his attempts to be honest fail, “He had spoken the truth, and transformed it into the veriest falsehood” (131). Even if Dimmesdale does confess, the people will not believe him.

“Then, and there, before the judgment-seat, thy mother, and thou, and I must stand together. But the daylight of this world shall not see our meeting!” (139)

Dimmesdale is seeking forgiveness by standing on the scaffold where Hester and Pearl stand every day. Through engaging with them in their punishment, Dimmesdale hopes he will be freed from his guilt. Pearl hopes that Dimmesdale will confess soon, and stand with them every day. He has to wait until, “the great judgment day” before he can confess. On that day, God will be his final judge, and until then, no one can know.

Questions:
Do Dimmesdale's visions of the scarlet letter mean he will confess soon?
How did the letter A appear in the sky?

The Scarlet Letter 5: 107-126

“To sum up the matter, it grew to be a widely diffused opinion, that the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, like many other personages of especial sanctity, in all ages of the Christian world, was haunted either by Satan himself, or Satan emissary, in the guise of old Roger Chillingworth” (116).

When Chillingworth arrived in the town, he was well regarded, “Heaven had wrought an absolute miracle”(110). It was a blessing for him to cure their beloved Reverend Dimmesdale. The downside was that through being around Chillingworth, Dimmesdale’s health suffered. As days went by, not only did Dimmesdale become unhealthier, but Chillingworth’s appearance became different, “something ugly and evil in his face” (116). It did not take long for the townspeople to pick up on Chillingworth’s evil intentions. Since most people did not spend time with Indians, Chillingworth created even more suspicion among the townspeople. Their only explanation for his presence was that he was Satan or a follower of Satan. His only goal was to harm their adored Reverend.

“Why should a wretched man, guilty, we will say of murder, prefer to keep the dead corpse buried in his own heart, rather than fling it forth at once, and let the universe take care of it!” (120)

Dimmesdale was determined to find Pearl’s father, so much to the extent of moving in with a suspect. Once he found him, he would torture him. Chillingworth would do whatever it took to get revenge. He was obsessed with hurting Dimmesdale; he wanted to play with his conscience. Chillingworth offered subtle hints that suggested he knew Dimmesdale was the father of Pearl. His goal was to guilt Dimmesdale into confessing. Chillingworth got the best of Dimmesdale. He was able to force Dimmesdale into saying he will never share his sin with him. This suggests he has committed a serious sin. In the end, Dimmesdale believes what he says does not matter because God will either save him or let him die.

Questions:
Does Dimmesdale suspect Chillingworth knows his sin?
If the people think Chillingworth is the Devil, will they do anything to get rid of him?

The Scarlet Letter 4: 91-107

“She resembled, in her fierce pursuit of them, an infant pestilence, - the scarlet fever, or some such half-fledged angel of judgment, - whose mission was to punish the sins of the rising generation” (93).

Pearl is the scarlet letter in action. Instead of remaining calm, Pearl solves her problems in an uncivilized way. Even though she is young, she will not let anyone talk to her in a negative way. Her offensive nature suggests she is the devil’s child, a product of sin. If Pearl was the product of sin, Hester cannot keep her. Hester needs Pearl because she will keep her from the darkness. Pearl will remind the townspeople that Hester is not the only one who sinned. If anyone insults her or her mother in the future, they would be punished.

"Would it be beyond a philosopher’s research, think ye, gentlemen, to analyze that child’s nature, and, from its make and mould, to give a shrewd guess at the father?" (106)

Chillingforth’s appearance has changed, “how much uglier they were,-how his dark complexion seemed to have grown duskier, and his figure more misshapen (102). His dark appearance suggests his evilness and obsessive desire to get revenge. Since, Chillingworth wants to guess who the father is, he may already know. Mr. Wilson protects Hester and Pearl through saying it is unnecessary. There is some good in the town, not everyone wants to see Hester and Pearl suffer.

Questions:
Does Mr. Wilson know who Pearl’s father is?
Why do they want to take Pearl away from Hester?

The Scarlet Letter 3: 72-91

"But it is not recorded that, in a single instance, her skill was called in aid to embroider the white veil which was to cover the pure blushes of a bride. The exception indicated the ever-relentless rigor with which society frowned upon her sin." (76)

Despite Hester’s beautiful handiwork, she was still hated by society and regarded as an outcast. Given the option to leave, Hester chose to stay, partly because her work “became what would now be termed the fashion” (76). The unique gift of needlework allowed her to support her daughter and herself. Everyone from the Governor to the little children wore her craftwork. That is everyone, except for brides. Brides were to be a symbol of purity and innocence, exactly what Hester was not. Not being able to embroider a bride’s veil was a result of Hester’s sin. Even the things that brought her pleasure, such as needlework, reminded her of her big mistake. If every aspect of her life revolved around the sin she committed, she would never be completely free from it.

"In giving her existence, a great law had been broken; and as the result was a being whose elements were perhaps beautiful and brilliant, but all in disorder; or with peculiar to themselves, amidst which the point of variety and arrangement was difficult or impossible to be discovered.” (83)

To Hester, Pearl was a blessing in disguise. Even though she was the result of a terrible sin, she was a gift from God. Pearl was the reason for Hester’s isolation, but she served as a reminder that there was some good among mostly evil. Pearl was, “her mother’s only treasure” (81) and brought her so much joy. Even though both Hester and Pearl were isolated and disliked by the townspeople, they had each other. Just like a pearl, Hester’s daughter was unique. Pearl’s special personality had the ability to change the way her mother viewed life.

Questions:
If everyone hated Hester so much, why did they want to wear something created by her?
Will the townspeople ever forgive Hester or Pearl, who did nothing wrong?

The Scarlet Letter 2: 56-72

“Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to step down from a high place, and stand there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than hide a guilty heart through life.” (63)

Why will Hester not acknowledge the person who engaged in the sin with her? Reverend Dimmesdale believes being silent will not benefit the sinner. He insists the man is too fearful to come forth and admit his own sins. Therefore, she must confess for him. If she confesses for the man, he will have nothing to hide, and she will be helping him. If she is suffering, so should the man. Even if no one knows who the father is, he will live with a guilty heart. Hester tries to protect the reputation of her accomplice. Similarly, Proctor tried to protect the reputation of the townspeople, “Did you ever see anyone with the devil?” “No, I did not” (140).

Even if I imagine a scheme of vengeance, what could I do better for my object than to let thee live,-than to give thee medicines against all harm and peril of life- so that this burning shame may blaze upon thy bosom? (68)

Roger Chillingworth’s view of Hester contrasted the view most townspeople had of her. He is not seeking revenge on Hester; instead he wants to help her. He feels sympathy for her, and given the chance, he would free her from all the trouble she faces. In Salem, all the people sought vengeance, “All tell you what’s walking Salem-vengeance is walking Salem” (77). They wanted everyone to suffer. Even if Chillingforth wanted vegeance, killing her would not help him.

Questions:
Why does Chillingworth want to live and die unknown?
Does Roger Chillingworth really want to help Hester?

The Scarlet Letter 1: 45-56

"Why, look you, she may cover it with a brooch, or such like heathenish adornment, and so walk the streets as brave as ever.” (49)

The letter A elaborately embroidered with gold thread on her dress showed that Hester did not need to cover it up in order to be proud. Since she was a seamstress, she had the option of making it small and hiding it, like one of the townspeople suggested. To them, wearing a garment confidently was not a suitable punishment. Everyone wanted to see her suffer in the worst possible way. As one woman stated, “Let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will always be in her heart” (49), they had no sympathy for her. Hester accepted her sin, but she would have to live with the consequences forever. No one will try to stand up for her. Similarly, no one tried to stand up for the "witches" in The Crucible.

“In our nature, however, there is a provision, alike marvelous and merciful, that the sufferer should never know the intensity of what he endures by its present torture, but chiefly by the pang that rankles after it” (52).

The townspeople have no sympathy for a sinner. For Hester, just walking to the market place with an A on her dress was torture. Standing on a platform where everyone could laugh at her was even worse. In The Crucible, death would be an awful punishment for Proctor. What was waiting for him in hell would be unbearable, “God damns our kind especially, and we will burn together” (120). Hester will never know the seriousness of her crime through the current punishment. The worse is always yet to come.

Questions:
Why does Hester not make an attempt to hide the letter A?
Does she feel any shame in wearing it? If she doesn’t, will she receive another punishment?

Crucible Essay #2

Aristotle famously stated, “Man perfected by society is the best of all animals; he is the most terrible of all when he lives without law and without justice.” Abigail Williams had no sense of justice, making her a despicable human being. Abigail was guilty of performing an endless number of crimes, one right after the other. Never once did she learn from her mistakes, apologize for them, or regret doing them. Abigail’s lust, fear, insecurity, and jealousy influenced her decision to lie and manipulate others; this led up to her treacherous fall.

If Abigail and Proctor initially engaged in the same crime, what makes Abigail more detestable? It is because Abigail continued committing crimes and felt no remorse for her actions. Proctor was “a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct” (Miller 20). He was not living up to his own standards, which meant he would suffer. Proctor was so ashamed of his actions he could not die with the townspeople because he would be dying like a saint, “They think to go like saints. I like not to spoil their names” (141). Even though Abigail committed more serious crimes than Proctor, in her eyes, she did nothing wrong. In Salem there was “no ritual for the washing away of the sins” (20). If this was the case, there was nothing Abigail could do about her sins because they did not matter. Abigail, unlike Proctor, failed to confess and was responsible for more crimes; therefore, Abigail is the most detestable.

If the justice system we have today was present in 1692, Abigail would have committed several felonies. Now, engaging in criminal activity requires the criminal to pay a heavy fine and a sentence in jail. Abigail Williams committed perjury; this cost innocent people their lives. When Danforth relied on her to tell the truth, she insisted it other people were incorrect, “It is a lie, sir” (103). Abigail is guilty of fraud, which is a deception made for personal gain to damage another individual. It is clear Abigail is responsible of this when she accuses different girls of being witches, “I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil” (48). Abigail’s only intention was to shift the blame off herself. This leads to the crime of attempted murder. Abigail is guilty of this because she had the full intent to commit murder, but was not willing to carry out the act. Next, Abigail stole thirty-one pounds from her uncle, “Thirty-one pound is gone. I am penniless” (126). Perjury, fraud, attempted murder, and robbery, are all criminal offenses. Anyone who commits a criminal offense deserves to be punished.

Abigail used the right people at the right time, for her bad purposes. Good intentions turned into fatal mistakes. Being a kind person, Mary Warren made a doll for the woman she worked for, Elizabeth Proctor. Since Abigail sat right next to Mary Warren, she saw her place a needle in the poppet. The only purpose was for safekeeping, and nothing else. If Abigail was going to accuse Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch, she was going to need sufficient evidence. If Abigail was to be stabbed in the stomach, conveniently, the doll in Elizabeth’s home would have a needle in it. If this was the case, Elizabeth must be practicing witchcraft. Abigail had Cheever enter and search the Proctor’s home for this doll; this is going against the Constitution. The U.S. Constitution has been the successful supreme law system in America for over two hundred years. The Fourth Amendment states, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized” (www.usconstitution.net/const.html#Am4). Cheever had no warrant; therefore, he had no right to search their home. If the U.S. Constitution was in effect in 1692, Abigail would not have gotten away with this and Elizabeth would still be innocent. When compared to the foundation of our justice system, Abigail’s treachery is unparallel.

Maybe it is unfair to judge Abigail by the justice system of our time. Instead, she should be judged by the justice system of her time, the Ten Commandments. Since Salem was a theocratic society, religion should have controlled every aspect of Abigail’s life. Through breaking almost all of the Ten Commandments, Abigail epitomizes a sinner. Abigail first broke the commandment, you shall not commit adultery, when she had an affair with John Proctor. Abigail’s desire for Proctor, led her to break another Commandment, you shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor. Through practicing witchcraft, Abigail was worshipping false gods. The combination of lying in court and blaming others, as well as stealing from her uncle, Abigail broke two more commandments, you shall not steal and you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. She lived under the household of Reverend Parris; therefore, she should have shown him respect, but she failed to do this. This led her to break the commandment of honoring thy mother and father. Considering if a member in Salem broke just one of these commandments, they were sentenced to hang by their necks, breath their last breaths, and lie lifeless in front of a boisterous crowd, what would be a suitable punishment for someone who broke six of these commandments? Under no justice system would Abigail be free from the treachery she caused.

If committing federal crimes and breaking the Commandments are not considered sins, what could be considered a sin? Not once did Abigail perform an act of kindness. She did not have an honest bone in her body, she mistreated her friends, and her only concern in life was how something would benefit her. Her manipulative nature allowed her to rule the town. Abigail claimed others sent out their spirits to harm her. However, she was the one who wanted to harm others. In some aspects, Abigail was guilty of this crime. She had everyone, including the judges, succumb to her. She was able to use her evil spirit to cast a spell on others into believing everything she said and did. If Abigail said Proctor was lying, he was lying. When faced in a situation that questioned her authority, Abigail resorted to her charm, “I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people-and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a-” (108). When the going got tough Abigail ran away. If Proctor lived by the motto, “do that which is good, and no harm shall come to thee” (95), how was Abigail able to escape? Abigail escaped from Salem, but she would never escape from God. Proctor meant that those who are righteous will be rewarded in heaven. Abigail will never be rewarded in heaven; instead, her reward lies in hell.

“Life is nothing but a competition to be the criminal rather than the victim” (Bertrand Russel). Abigail won the competition. Despite being young, she was able to get the best of everyone. She manipulated the judges, and once they were under her spell, they believed all her lies. If someone is oblivious of your intentions, you can get away with anything, even murder. By the time Abigail’s true nature was revealed, it was too late; she had already disappeared. Maybe Abigail escaped Salem in time, but she will never escape the wrath of God.

Letter 3: To Hale from Parris asking him to come to Salem

Dear Reverend Hale,

I am honored to be writing to such an intelligent man. It was called to my attention that you spent a great deal of your time contemplating the supernatural world. I was also informed you encountered a witch in your parish recently. Although I highly doubt the devil’s presence in Salem, outlandish events have been occurring. My innocent daughter, Betty, is lying in an unresponsive state. Just recently, Doctor Griggs informed Susanna Walcott, that there was no medicine in his books for her sickness. I would prefer not to look at unnatural causes for her illness, but I witnessed such events. I saw my niece Abigail, my daughter Betty, and a few other girls dancing and singing in the forest late at night. Although Abigail informed me no harm was done, I am suspicious. She warned me that the townspeople have been discussing the possibility of witchcraft in Salem. Since I have a higher position in society, I do not know much of what goes on among the townspeople.

Although Thomas Putnam has a daughter with similar symptoms as Betty, he concluded the reason for their suffering is witchcraft. Putnam is a wealthy member in society and he holds feelings of resentment towards many other families in Salem. There must be a reason for why he jumped to the conclusion of witchcraft, but I am unsure right now. Therefore, I refuse to declare the discovery of witchcraft until I have further evidence.

Reverend, I fear my position and reputation. Lately, citizens have been staying away from church because they dislike the way I preach. Many of them are angry that I called you without having a meeting. I am worried and concerned something worse will come of this situation. I believe it will not be long before the town goes wild or there will be a rebellion. My daughter’s life and my ministry are at stake right now. I would greatly appreciate if you would be of assistance and come forth to help us in this difficult time.

Thank you,
Reverend Samuel Parris

Letter 2: To Elizabeth from Proctor after he dies

Dear Elizabeth,

Surely it will not be easy, but please forgive me. I made a terrible mistake and now I must pay the consequences. Do you remember when I said that your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never be able tear it free? You responded by saying I will tear it free- when I come to realize that you will be my only wife, or no wife at all. Elizabeth, you are my only wife. I committed a terrible sin; I broke one of the commandments. I thought fondly of Abigail for a time; but I never had love for her. You know I am an honest man and I would never lie.

There are a few things you must promise me. First, you will never blame yourself for my actions. You kept our house warmer than all of the homes in Salem. It was my entire fault because I took advantage of your kindness. I did not realize how wonderful you were until I almost lost you. Secondly, you must promise me you will always keep your honesty and integrity. When we were in court you almost cost me my life, but you were trying to protect my name. For that, I am forever grateful. Lastly, promise to be a wonderful mother for our children. Take care of them and help them to make good decisions. I want them to grow up to be better than me.

Even if I was not the loving husband I should have been, I always meant to please you, Elizabeth. No farmer could ever ask for a better wife. Right before I die, I will be praying for you and everything you have done for me. When I am gone, be brave and do not shed a tear; that is what they want from you. The town has been corrupted; we did our best to save it. Even though we failed, we succeeded. You helped me to discover what was inside myself and I will always appreciate that. Most importantly, always remember, “Do that which is good, and no harm shall come to thee.” I love you Elizabeth, I always have and I always will.

Sincerely your husband,
John

Letter 1: To Proctor from Abigail before she leaves

My Dear John,

It’s not too late, don’t worry. We can still be together, forever. All you have to do is confess to Danforth. John, I want you to understand, I never wished for any of this to happen. I just sought to free you from your dreadful wife. I knew you would never leave her. You are a good man. Goody Proctor is an evil woman. It was necessary that I replace her. I would have succeeded too, but you accused me. Vengeance? How could you think I wanted vengeance? Why did you blacken my name, John? You took my kind actions for granted and tried to ruin me. Even worse, you tried to ruin your own name. I forgive you though. You have shown me what goodness is. Goody Proctor is holding you back. Oh how I wish you could switch places with her right now. You would be free and she would be suffering. Please forgive me for saying such a cruel thing, but your wife brings me no joy.

I must tell you, I am going away. Staying in Salem is not safe for me right now. I’m sure you will understand. After your attempt to destroy me, everyone has become suspicious. Andover has overthrown their court, they do not believe in witchcraft. I am fearful that will occur in Salem. If it does, I will be hanged. By the time you read this, Mercy Lewis and I will be ready to board the ship. Don’t wait; you must hurry if you want to meet up with us.

I’ll never forget the night you pulled me from my bed. I haven’t stopped dreaming and praying for the day we would be together again. Every night I hope you come by, but you never do. You already left me once, John. Please do not leave me again. To be alone would be unbearable. I promise it is not possible to have a better wife than me. The light from heaven will shine upon us when we meet again.

All my love,
Abigail

The Crucible Essay #1

"You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try" (Beverly Sills). John Proctor was the only one in Salem who knew the reason behind the trials, vengeance. Abigail Williams needed to get revenge on Proctor’s wife, if she wanted to be with Proctor. One tragic event would lead to another tragic event, creating a domino effect. John Proctor was the first one to set off this chain reaction and by the time he tried to stop it, he was too late; therefore, Proctor deserves the most blame for the Salem witch trials.

John Proctor, being a well-respected married adult in Salem, should not have given into the temptation of a seventeen year old girl. Through having an affair with Abigail Williams, Proctor made a promise to her. Although John had no intention of being with her, Abigail thought differently. Elizabeth Proctor, John’s wife, helped clear this up for him, “Spoke or silent, a promise is surely made. And she may dote on it now- I am sure she does- and thinks to kill me, then to take my place” (Miller 61). Proctor forced Abigail to act this way, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart” (24). Through initially cheating on his wife, Proctor instilled false hope within Abigail’s mind.

Despite being young, Abigail was manipulative and intelligent. She knew the only way to shift the blame off herself would be to accuse someone else. She could not blame just anyone though; they had to be an outcast of society. If the person she held guilty admitted to being a witch, she would gain trust and respect from authority. Only out of fear for losing their lives, several people confessed. This showed the judges that Abigail was reliable and would be able to accuse anyone she wanted. It was inevitable that given the chance, Abigail would accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft, “She’d dare not call out such a farmer’s wife, but there be monstrous profit in it” (61). If Abigail had no intention of being with Proctor, there would be no reason to kill Elizabeth. Consequently, if there were no reason to kill Elizabeth, there would be no reason to kill anyone in Salem.

Since Salem was a theocratic society, religion meant everything to the townspeople, but not Proctor. He did not attend church, plowed on Sundays, and could not name the Ten Commandments. Proctor expressed to Parris, “There are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardly ever mention God anymore” (29). This led the judges to believe, if Proctor was a victim of the Devil, it was likely that there were more people like him.

In regards to the trials, Proctor failed to take immediate action and hoped the problem would take care of itself. Even after Elizabeth warned him, “God forbid you keep that from the court, John. I think they must be told” (53) John was unwilling to confront the judges. He feared revealing the intentions behind Abigail’s actions because his reputation would be hurt. To Proctor, like most people in Salem, reputation was everything. If he admitted to having an affair with Abigail, his name would be ruined and his wife would be embarrassed. Not until his wife was accused of being a witch, did he get involved with the trials. Unfortunately, Abigail had already taken over the town, “She thinks to dance on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands. I know you must see it now” (110). When asked if this was true, Abigail responded, “If I must answer that, I will leave and I will not come back again” (111). By the time he confessed and stood up for what was right, everyone had succumbed to Abigail, including the judges. Proctor knew his inability to speak up resulted in unnecessary deaths; therefore, Proctor admitted he was responsible for the witch trials.

Although several people in Salem felt responsible for the trials, Proctor felt the most. If remaining silent was not a sin, Proctor would not feel the need to be punished, “For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed…God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together”(120). Proctor lived by the motto, “Do that which is good, and no harm shall come to thee” (95). He did something bad, caused the witch trials, and harm would come to him, he would die.

Proctor sparked Abigail’s desire to get revenge on Elizabeth. This motivated other members of society to get revenge on their enemies. If Proctor did not have an affair with Abigail, she would not have the longing to be with him. Proctor was the only one who knew why Abigail accused people of being witches. Proctor thought the problem would take care of itself; he was wrong. Through giving into temptation and remaining silent in a time of tragedy, Proctor was responsible for the Salem witch trials. “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it, is really cooperating with it” (Martin Luther King Jr.).

The Crucible HW 9

Pages 129-145

"Postponement now speaks a floundering on my part; reprieve or pardon must cast doubt upon the guilt of them died till now. While I speak God’s law, I will not crack its voice with whimpering." (129)

No one in Salem wanted to risk hurting their reputation, especially Danforth. He knew he was wrong about the executions, but he was fearful of admitting his mistake. Living in a theocratic society, Danforth believed he was above everyone else and represented God on earth. Lies became the truth to him. Admitting his ignorance would lead people to believe he was uncertain of himself and innocent people were persecuted. If this occured, the town would be a step closer to a rebellion. Hale made it clear that there was no excuse for taking the life of anyone, “No principle however glorious, may justify the taking of it.” (132) Danforth’s pride took over his actions. If he had the courage to admit he was wrong, less people would have been killed.

"I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough!"(142)

Why should John Proctor sign his name, when he already confessed to the highest judge, God? Proctor admitted his sins; he should not have to write his name on a piece of paper to be hung in the church for everyone to see. Proctor already gave up his soul, but Danforth wanted more from him. Proctor, not influenced by the people around him, was not willing to lie and shift the blame. Elizabeth supported Proctor until the end, “He have his goodness now.” (145) It did not matter if the judge sentenced Proctor to death. Proctor would rather die with honor and respect, than live a life filled with guilt and remorse. If God was ruling Salem, instead of Danforth, Proctor might have been saved.

Questions:
Why is Proctor persecuted even though he confessed?
What does Hale do after the execution?

"A fire, a fire is burning! I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face! And it is my face, and yours, Danforth! For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed, and as you quail now when you know in all your black hearts that this be fraud- God damns our kind especially, and we will burn together!” (120)

In the heat of the moment, people often say things they would later regret. For example, Mary accused Proctor as, “the Devil’s man!” (118) Fearing her own life, she immediately blamed Proctor for her actions. John Proctor, now furious, used this opportunity to take his frustration out on the court. Saying, “God is dead!” (119) was not the best way for Proctor to defend himself. Proctor used this phrase meaning, God no longer had control over Salem, the people did. Danforth misinterpreted this; he was confident that Proctor was follower of the Devil. Proctor did nothing to prevent the Salem witch trials; therefore, he felt he would be going to hell. Danforth would also be going to hell because he witnessed and allowed them to occur, knowing they were based on a lie. Not only did this cause Hale to quit the court, but it might cost Proctor his life.

“I’ll tell you what is said here, sir. Andover have thrown out the court, they say, and will have no part of witchcraft. There be a fraction here, feeding on that news, and I tell you true, sir, I fear there will be riot here.” (127)

Reverend Parris, fearful since the start of the trials, predicted a rebellion against the court. The possibility of this occurring was very likely, especially since a riot in Andover triumphed over authority. If the townspeople were intelligent, they would realize they could do the same. The court cannot persecute everyone in the town until there are no people left. The citizens had a better chance of overthrowing the court, than the court did of overthrowing them. The events in Andover connected to the reason for Abigail’s departure. She, along with Parris, was fearful and doubtful. Abigail had done everything she wanted; there was no reason for her to stay. If she stayed too long, the town would turn on her, and she would be the one hanged.

Questions:

1.) Herrick says Proctor prays with those who will be hanged. Is he also against the witch trials?
2.) If Abigail comes back to Salem will she be rewarded or hated?

“Excellency, I have signed seventy-two death warrants; I am a minister of the Lord, and I dare not take a life without there be proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscience may doubt it.” (99)

Reverend Hale struggled with decision to protect his name or defend those who were innocent. His view on the Salem witch trials has changed; he can no longer support them. Being an outsider, Hale knew very little about individuals in Salem, but he got a sense of who they were through questioning them. Hale entered Salem hoping to cure the town from the devil. Killing everyone in Salem would not solve this problem. With the help of Proctor, Hale felt guilty about his actions and joined sides with Proctor. Hale admitted he would never take the life of a human without sufficient evidence. Contradictorily to Hale, Danforth believed witchcraft, “by its nature is an invisible crime” and “therefore we must rely upon her victims.” (100) In Danforth’s opinion the only evidence they had were the young girls. What if Mary was right and the girl’s were lying? Hale feared standing up for himself and taking a firm stance against authority. As a result, he saved no one and more people suffered.

“I have been hurt, Mr. Danforth; I have seen my blood runnin’ out! I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a-” (108)

Abigail’s manipulative nature allowed her to, once again, get her way. Being overly dramatic and heartless, she was able to defend herself and remain innocent. Abigail was determined to stand up for herself, even if it meant lying. Demonstrated by John Proctor, those who were honest would be rewarded. However, Abigail did not have an honest bone in her body, and she was the only one who succeeded in Salem. The other characters should have learned from Abigail’s evil ways and used it to their advantage. Mary Warren was one of the few to stand up for herself. Although, standing up for yourself to someone who threatened they could, “make you wish you had never seen the sun go down,” (20) might not be the best idea. Abigail knew who she was working with and knew what she could get away with. Abigail tried to make others, especially Danforth, sympathize her, and she was able to, “Child, I do not mistrust you-”(108) She had everyone wrapped around her finger. Consequentially, she would be able to get what she desired most… revenge.

Questions:
Why does Danforth not make Abigail respond to whether Proctor is telling the truth or not?
Why can Mary not faint for Danforth, especially if she has done it many times before?

The Crucible HW 6

Pages 83-98

“Does it not strike upon you that so many of these women have lived so long with such upright reputation, and-” (91)

Why now are women accused of being witches when they have lived righteously their whole lives? John Proctor brought this up in an attempt to defend and stand up for his wife. Unfortunately, he was unable to finish his statement, because he was interrupted with a question from Reverend Parris. Parris, making an effort to show Proctor's ignorance asked, “Do you read the Gospel, Mr. Proctor?” (91) Like most men in Salem, Proctor did read the Gospel. Parris feared being connected with the devil, and therefore, felt the need to show his intelligence, “I think not, or you should surely know that Cain were an upright man, and yet he did kill Abel.” (91) This connect to the theme of reputation. Parris pointed out the flaws in others to put himself above them. Parris also indicated that through not knowing the Gospel, Proctor and his wife might have a connection with the devil.

"Indeed not, but strike hard upon me that she will dare come here with such a tale. Now, Mr. Proctor, before I decide whether I shall hear you or not, it is my duty to tell you this. We burn a hot fire here; it melts down all concealment.” (89)

Wanting to save his wife, John Proctor brought Mary Warren to the court scene with him. She openly confessed that she and the other girls were lying, “It were pretense, sir.” (89) The judge was puzzled by her statement and unsure of what to do. One thing was for sure though; “a vile lie would not be spread in open court.”(89) The judges were filled with stress, anxiety, and tension. Most likely, they were afraid of being wrong. They would not take the blame for taking the lives of innocent people. Danforth demonstrated that the government was under a lot of pressure, but they were still striving to reveal any secrets.

Questions:
If the judges do not believe Mary, who will they believe?
Does Hale support the Salem witch trials?

Pages 67-83

“I cannot think the Devil may own a woman’s soul, Mr. Hale, when she keeps an upright way, as I have. I am a good woman, I know it; and if you believe I may do only good work in the world and yet be secretly bound to Satan, then I must tell you, sir, I do not believe it.” (70)

John and Elizabeth Proctor were part of a small group in Salem that did not believe in witches. They understood Abigail’s evil intentions behind her actions. Elizabeth did nothing wrong, and therefore, had no reason to be accused of being possessed by the devil. Abigail's plan to kill Elizabeth would work though. Elizabeth did not believe in witches, which meant she would never confess to being one. This ensured that once Elizabeth was accused, she would put to death.

“I’ll tell you what’s walking Salem- vengeance is walking Salem. We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! The warrant’s vengeance! I’ll now give my wife to vengeance!” (77)

John Proctor was the only one in Salem who knew the true nature of the girls. Abigail first accused Sarah Good and Goody Osburn because they were the outcasts in society. The main reason Abigail wanted power was to get revenge on Elizabeth Proctor. Nothing about Elizabeth Proctor has changed; she has always been religious and never worshipped the devil. Unfortunately, the judges were manipulated by the girls. They believed everything they said and regarded their fantasies as true. Their imaginations became evidence. No one wanted to hurt their reputation by standing up for what was right. The people accused were not witches, but just had bad relationships with Abigail and her friends.

Questions:
Did Mary know Abigail’s plan when she gave Elizabeth Proctor the doll?
If everyone in Salem believes in witches, why don’t the Proctor’s?

The Crucible HW 4

Pages 49-67

"The town’s gone wild, I think. She speaks of Abigail, and I thought she were a saint, to hear her. Abigail brings the other girls into the court and where she walks the crowd part like the sea for Israel. And folks are brought before them, and if they scream and howl and fall to the floor- the person’s clapped in jail for bewitchin’ them." (52)

The people in Salem are obsessed with witchcraft and the idea that the Devil is present in their town. They believed and did whatever it took to free themselves from the Devil. Abigail was granted the authority to decide who deserved to live and who deserved to die. If Salem did not put their trust in a few teenage girls, the witch trials could have been easily avoided. Originally, Abigail was fearful that she would be accused of being a witch, so she immediately pointed her finger at someone else, usually an outcast of society. Abigail was intelligent and had the ability to manipulate others. These people succumbed to her, and as a result, she was able to gain control over the town. No one dared to oppose her because they risked losing their own life.

I’ll plead no more! I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free! (62)

Salem was filled with tension, not only between neighbors, but between husbands and wives. John Proctor could not understand how much he affected his wife by cheating on her. Although, it was one of his few mistakes, Elizabeth could not forgive him. She lost all her trust and faithfulness in him. This is unfortunate because with chaos in Salem, Elizabeth and John might need each other’s support. John’s “single error” had a much larger impact then he realized. John gave Abigail hope that they would be together one day, as long as Elizabeth was not around. Elizabeth fired Abigail from her job because she had an affair with her husband. This led to Abigail’s hatred for Elizabeth. The only reason Abigail practiced witchcraft was to kill Elizabeth. Proctor was not aware that the Salem Witch Trials were a consequence of his single mistake. Accusing Elizabeth of being a witch would be the best way to get rid of her. John Proctor was correct; he would never be able to free himself from the turmoil he caused.

Questions:
When naming the commandments, why did John Proctor forget adultery, after he just discussed it with his wife and knew it was the only commandment he broke?
Since Sarah Good confessed to witchcraft, she was not hanged and only had to sit in jail. If Abigail confessed to witchcraft why doesn’t she have to sit in jail?

The Crucible HW 3

1.) “We cannot look to superstition in this. The Devil is precise; the marks of his presence are definite as stone, and I must tell you that I shall not proceed unless you are prepared to believe me if I should find no bruise of hell upon her.” (38)

Reverend Hale is considered to be an expert on witchcraft. Reverend Parris called for him to save his daughter. Hale believes the cause for suffering is not always a result of witchcraft. The Devil’s actions are clear, and death is not always an action of the Devil. Reverend Hale is sincere and does not want the people in Salem to be upset if he is wrong. Honesty is important to him; unlike the citizens in Salem, and he wants to be sure they trust him. Supposedly, Hale encountered a witch in his own parish and was able to cure her. The people admire his intelligence and hope he has the ability to save their town.

2.) “I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” (48)

This quote is significant because it is the start of the Salem witch trials. These were the first accusations and encouraged other girls to join in. Abigail and her friends could not decide whether telling the truth was the right decision. When faced with a difficult question from her uncle, Abigail immediately blamed Tituba. This demonstrates Abigail’s dishonesty and untrustworthiness. Only after Abigail saw the praise Tituba received from confessing, Abigail was willing to confess. Hale stated, “God will bless you for your help.” If one admits to practicing witchcraft, they would redeem themselves. Noticing this, Abigail acknowledged her sins and accused other people for following the devil. This led to the assumptions that the town was filled with witches.

Questions:
1.) If all the people who were accused of being a witch confessed, would they still have been killed?
2.) If Corey Giles’s wife read (and at the time reading was prohibited) and he experiences the stoppage of prayer in her presence, is he accusing his wife of being a witch?

Character List

Abigail: a seventeen year old girl, an orphan, lives with her uncle Reverend Parris, had an affair with John Proctor, tries to win him back, but he doesn’t want her, practices witchcraft, danced and drank blood, accuses Tituba for making her do this, after Tituba confesses, she confesses too, and then blames people for being witches
Tituba: honest, slave from Barbados, practices witchcraft with the girls, confesses to this, and then accuses other people of being followers of the devil

Reverend Parris: the current minister of Salem, many people dislike his sermons, several of them want to replace him, his daughter is sick and he calls Reverend Hale to help her
Betty: Reverend Parris’s daughter, young, quiet, thought to be a victim of the devil, does not say much because she is lying in bed, once Abigail admits her sins and accuses people of being witches, she does the same
Mr. Putnam: doesn’t like the Nurse’s because they prevented his brother-in-law from becoming minister
Mrs. Putnam: seven children died in childbirth, only one surviving is very sick, she thinks they were murdered by “evil spirits”
Rebecca Nurse: Francis Nurse’s wife, kind, very religious
Hail: Reverend from Beverly, intelligent, can detect the devil easily, and supposedly an expert on witchcraft
Corey Giles: old, suspicious of his wife, Martha, experienced the stoppage of prayer
John Proctor: a farmer, married to Elizabeth, cheated on his wife with Abigail, doesn’t believe in witches
Elizabeth Proctor: John Proctor’s wife, fired Abigail from her job as a servant because she had an affair with her husband, Abigail wants to get back at her

The Crucible HW 2

1.) This will set us all to arguin’ again in the society, and we thought to have peace this year. I think we ought rely on the doctor now, and good prayer. (28)

Explanation:
The townspeople in Salem have bad relationships with each other. Many have strong opinions and are not willing to compromise. Rebecca makes an attempt to calm people down, but this only results in more arguing. In the past there have been many quarrels, but she is hoping this will change. Rebecca also expresses the importance and their reliance on prayer.

2.) I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! (24)

Explanation:
Abigail wants John Proctor to come back to her, but he is not interested. This expresses Abigail’s hatred for the townspeople in Salem. She considers them to be deceitful and insincere. She was raised to value religion and honesty. These people’s actions contradict their beliefs. Being a Christian does not mean anything, and people will often lie and mislead others to get what they want.

Questions:
Rebecca believes that God is the cause for all suffering. If religion is important to these people, why do they disagree with her?
Elizabeth Proctor wants to get revenge on Abigail because she had an affair with her husband. Are the witch trials a result of past arguments between a few people?

The Crucible Homework

1.) “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you… I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!” (20)
Abigail does not want anyone to know she is a witch or she will risk losing her life. This shows witchcraft is a serious issue that must not be talked about. Abigail will be furious if one of the girls shares what they did that night with anyone.

2.) “Let you strike out against the Devil, and the village will bless you for it! Come down, speak to them- pray with them. They’re thirsting for your word, Mister! Surely you’ll pray with them. (17)
Mr. Putnam shows the importance of religion in society. He hopes Reverend Parris is able to defeat the devil, or witchcraft. If he is able to save the people from suffering, he will be appreciated by the village. Hearing the Reverend speak and pray reassures the people that they will be protected from the Devil.

Questions:
1.) If Parris is so confident that his daughter is not sick from “unnatural causes,” why does he question Abigail about what she was doing in the forest ?
2.) If Mary, Betty, Abigail, Mercy, and Ruth know that practicing witchcraft is a terrible sin, why do they do it?

The Crucible Classwork

Reverend Samuel Parris~ middle-aged, religious, strict, doesn’t like children, used to be a merchant, but now a minister
“He believed he was being persecuted wherever he went, despite his efforts to win people and God to his side.” (3)
“He was a widower with no interest in children or talent with them.” (3)

Betty Parris~ Reverend Parris’s ten year old daughter, maybe dead
“He mumbles, then seems about to weep; then he weeps, then prays again; but his daughter does not stir on her back” (8)

Tituba~ Parris’s slave from Barbados, she is in her forties, thoughtful, careful, and compassionate
"She enters as one does who can no longer bear to be barred from the sight of her beloved, but she is also very frightened because her slave sense has warned her that, as always, trouble in this house eventually lands on her back." (8)
“My Betty be hearty soon…” (8)
“My Betty not goin’ die…”(8)

Abigail Williams~ an orphan and also Parris’s beautiful seventeen year niece

The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692. This is the time of the Salem witch trials. The characters live in a small community and take their religion very seriously. “The people of Salem developed a theocracy, a combine of state and religious power whose function was to keep the community together, and to prevent any kind of disunity that might open it to destruction by material or ideological enemies.” (7) At this time, the people of Salem have a strict way of life and are not allowed to enjoy entertainment. Little is known about their daily lives because they were not allowed to read or write.

Although this play is not entirely historically correct, most events occurred and all the characters played the same or a similar role in history. This play will offer insight to the feelings and thoughts of the people during the Salem witch trials. “This predilection for minding other people’s business was time-honored among the people of Salem, and it undoubtedly created many of the suspicions which were to feed the coming madness.” (5) The community in Salem might have been stressed out from their strict lives and wanted to have fun. They started rumors and false stories to entertain themselves. Since everything in Salem was taken seriously, especially religion, all accusations were regarded as true. They believed anyone who went against church teachings deserved to be killed.

Journal Entry 3: From the perspective of the "new kid"

Dear Diary,

When you’re a freshman and you enter a new high school, it’s a big deal. Imagine entering a new high school at least three times a year. I’ve never been to a school dance. I’ve never acted in a play. I’ve never tried out for a sport. I’ve never even had real friends.

We moved last week again. Eight schools in three years.

The first day is always the worst. It gets better though. Unfortunately, as soon as I get comfortable at my new school, we move. Some people like going to a new school, because it allows them to be anyone they want. I just want to fit it.

I spent an hour trying to decide what to wear this morning. At most schools, girls wear cute polo shirts and skirts. At other schools, girls wear pajamas. I decided to put on my favorite jeans and my light blue sweater. I thought I looked pretty and I felt confident in my outfit.

My mother promised this would be the last time we moved. She said that last time. “Good luck, honey. Everything will be fine, just remember to smile.” I always took her advice.

The first day school of school is always the same. You walk into school, people give you blank stares, and then, you attempt to find your first class. Along the way you will get a few smiles, and fifty people will stop and say, “Hi, what’s your name? Are you new here? Where are you from? You’ll love our school so much.” I should wear a sign that says, “Hi, my name is Tiffany, this is my first day here, and my father is in the military, so we move a lot.”

I’ve been to so many schools. I have experienced many different teachers and teaching styles. This school is definitely the most strict I’ve been to in awhile. “Tiffany, don’t think because you’re new, you don’t need a book.” How was I supposed to know that I needed a copy of The Scarlet Letter, my first day?

My day got better though. Math was my best subject, so I looked forward to it. The teacher was impressed with my work. I don’t think she knew that I learned the material two weeks ago at my old school.

I was so excited when a couple of girls invited me to sit with them at lunch. How was I going to remember all their names? The two girls with blonde hair and blue eyes were Kelsey and Lauren. The girl with the glasses was Rachel. Jessica had brown curly hair. Melissa had green eyes, or was her name Nicole?

The girl’s talked about homecoming all lunch. We never had homecoming at my old schools, or if we did I missed it. I think it’s a big football game, but I’m not sure. “I wonder who will be homecoming king and queen. I voted for Katie and Sean. Who did you vote for? My dress will be pink, what color will yours be, Tiffany?" Maybe it’s not a football game.

After school the girl’s told me all about homecoming. I was right, there would be a football game, but there was a dance too. They were on their way to soccer practice. I learned that soccer’s almost over and basketball is starting soon. They told me I should try out. I think I will. I’d never played on an organized team before, but I always play with my older brother.

Being the “new kid” wasn’t so bad this time. I might be going to my first dance, I might play a sport, and finally, I might have my first real friends.

Things were definitely going to be different, but for the first time…I didn’t mind.

Love, Tiffany

Journal Entry 2: From the perspective of a girl with anorexia

Dear Diary,

I’m so hungry! I need to eat more, but I can’t. Food is disgusting. I’ll look obese if I eat any more than I already do.

Today was a typical day, nothing out of the ordinary. I woke up, got dressed, looked in the mirror, and cried. Why can’t I be happy with who I am? My mother and sisters are thin, attractive, and confident. Why not me? After I put on my baggy jeans and sweatshirt, I ran down the stairs and out the door as fast as I could. I did not want to be tempted by the smell of cinnamon rolls baking in the oven.

School was the same as always. The popular kid’s would giggle and stare at me. Everything got better when I saw my friends though. They always gave me a warm greeting, “Oh my goodness, Meghan, you look way too skinny in those jeans.” They are always criticizing their own bodies. It feels nice when they give me a compliment.

I could barely stay awake through AP History. My eyes struggled to stay open. Right before lunch we had a Pre-Calculus test. I don’t think I did well on it. All I could focus on were the weird noises my stomach was making. I was distracting everyone in the class too. It would be silent and then it would happen. The whole class would look at me and laugh. It shouldn’t have been a problem though. Sarah kept on coughing and no one stared at her.

Lunch time. The most dreaded part of the day. Like most days, I told my friends I wanted to get my homework done in the library. They always believed me. I shouldn’t have lied to them, but I don’t want them to think I have an eating disorder.

I was always the fastest member of the cross country team. Not anymore. Now, I can barely keep up. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I am tired, weak, lazy, and of course, hungry, all the time. I have the energy and strength of a ninety-nine year old man. This shouldn’t be happening.

I always look forward to going home after long days. I’m usually too upset to eat though. Every day, I hear people saying, “She’s lost way too much weight. She used to be cute, but not anymore.” This made me so mad, especially because my freshman year people would always say, “She’s not ugly, but she would be prettier if she lost ten pounds.” I thought maybe if I lost twenty pounds people would like me even more. I guess not.

Celebrities are praised because of the way they look. Models are definitely skinnier than I am. Every girl in a magazine is thin and gorgeous. Why can’t I look like them? One day I will.

I hate it when people stare at me like I’m from another planet. I don’t like the word anorexic either; it makes it sound like anorexia is a terrible disease. I’m not sure if my family and friends know yet. It’s been two years. I should probably get help… but not yet.

Love,
Meghan =)

Journal Entry 1: From the perspective of the worst member of a sports team

Dear Journal,

I’ve never been this frustrated before. I've always loved soccer. I use to be really good at it too. I should be good, I’ve played since I was five. I know our school has over a thousand kids in it, but I should be on the team. Being a senior, I should be the best one on the team. I was wrong, very wrong. I was lucky to be on Varsity.

What’s the point of playing if you’re the worst one on the team? Everyone keeps criticizing me and talking about me behind my back. It’s so annoying. Every time I leave the locker room I hear my teammates say, “Wow, she’s been playing since she was five. I feel so bad for her; she hasn’t gotten any better since then.” Why do some people think its okay to talk about other people behind their backs? Girls can be so mean. They should be supportive of me and encourage me to work harder. If they notice I kick the ball wrong, they should tell me. Then, I can fix it. I feel like they gave up on me, and I’m starting to give up on myself.

I never get to play in the games. Yes, I accidently scored a goal for the other team. That was one time. I promised that would never happen again. Anyways, we still won the game. I get nervous when I play because I don't want to make that mistake again. I’m so sick of sitting on the bench. I can’t take much more of it. Even worse, it’s getting really cold out. The bench feels like ice and there are only so many sweatshirts you can wear before you look ridiculous.

It’s not like I’m not trying. I need to work twice as hard as the other girls in order to prove myself to them. Our team has practiced six days a week since August. I haven’t missed a single practice, except for one because I had to go to the doctors.

Soccer takes up so much time. What about my friends? What about my family? What about school? I don’t think I’ve seen my friends, Brianna and Amanda, in 8 weeks. We used to spend so much time together, but now I have no time for them. I thought playing soccer would allow me to make more friends, but instead I lost the ones I already had. Not only have I been neglecting my friends and family, but I’m starting to neglect my school work. This isn’t like me. I have to get a good education if i want to be successful. Unfortunately, I don’t get home until late and by the time I start doing my homework, I’m exhausted.

I think I should quit. I know everyone can’t be the best, but I hate being the worst. I’m sick and tired of people disrespecting and insulting me. Soccer should be fun, not stressful. I understand the coaches want to win, I want to win too. However, I think when we’re up 7-0, I should be given a chance to play. Maybe things will get better. They can’t get much worse from here.

Good Luck,
XOXOXOX
YTalulah

Letter to your future husband (6)

Dear Future Husband,

Will you always love me? That’s a silly question; I know you will, unconditionally. I haven’t met you yet, maybe tomorrow, maybe ten years, but I know you are out there. I’ve never really thought about you, but when I see you it will be love at first sight. We both won’t be perfect, but we’ll be perfect for each other. I’m going to make mistakes, but I’m going to learn from them. Love. Trust. Respect. Honesty. These values will be the foundation of our marriage, and with them we will last together forever.
It won’t take long for me to fall in love with your smile. My heart will skip a beat when I see the look in your eyes when you say, “I love you.” I’m going to get butterflies every time I’m with you. You’ll make my heart melt when you hold my hand and you whisper in my ear. It will be like the whole world stops when you talk to me. Everything will be better when I am with you. I love everything about you from the way you share your popcorn to the way you always laugh at my bad jokes. You’ll love me and accept me for who I am. You won’t care what I look like or what I have. You’ll know I love you because my eyes will sparkle and my face will light up when I see you.
You will be made for me. I want the best for you, and you want the best for me. We are going to help each other get through difficult times and show each other endless support. You will do whatever it takes to make me smile. We won’t have everything in the world, but we’ll be happy, and that’s all that matters.

Our friends and family will be extremely important to us. I know they will get along and will love each other. Your mom will treat me like I’m her own daughter. They will say we were made for each other and we look adorable together. I know we’re going to have a lot of fun together. You are never going to want to leave my side. We’re going to do so much together, and we’re going to treasure every moment. I hope you like the beach and you like to be active. You’ll be happy with who you are and won’t be afraid of what other people think of you.
We’ll bring out the best in each other. We’ll try new things and have fun sharing what we like. Of course we will love to travel, explore, and spend lots of time with our families. We will save our money and buy a wonderful home. Whether it’s big or small doesn’t matter because it will be our own castle, and yes……we will live happily ever after!

XOXO
Your future wife
Genevieve

Letter from nature to humanity (5)

Dear Humanity

Everyday you are hurting me! Over the past centuries you have made so many advancements. I am thrilled that your lives are easier and you can get things done more efficiently, however, I feel that you are taking advantage of me. At the beginning of time you used to appreciate everything I provided you with. You would thank me and were careful not to waste anything. Now, you take everything for granted and only want to benefit yourself. The population is increasing, due to our advanced technology and medicine. I think that is great, but it is creating larger cities meaning more pollution. Not only have people stopped caring for each other, but they have stopped caring for me.
I am special and unique from all the other planets. I have vast oceans, soaring mountains, deserts, and diverse plants and animals. These, unfortunately, will not last forever. Many humans take what they want from me and cannot put it back or return it to me. Through killing trees and animals you are taking something away and failing to replace. If you cut down a tree, plant a new one. You may be unaware, but every day you are releasing hazardous chemicals which make it harder and harder to breath. I have given you all I can to survive, like water, oxygen, and food. Just remember to take care of my resources, they are not going to last forever. You have been warned before, “Don’t harm the land, the sea, or the trees until we have marked the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads.” (Revelation 7:3)
Luckily, scientists are not the only ones who are noticing these damages. Ordinary people are starting to see the risks of not taking care of me. More and more people are caring and doing all they can to save me. I appreciate it when people take notice and think about their actions. Simple things like recycling, conserving energy by turning off the lights when you leave the room, unplugging appliances, and turning off the water when you brush your teeth or wash the dishes, will make a big difference to me. It’s important not to waste water. You’d be surprised by how much water you save by limiting yours showers to fewer than five minutes. If you must drive a car, try to carpool, if possible take your bike or walk. You will be saving money, getting exercise, and keeping the air fresh and clean. Take advantage of the technology we have now, use the internet, send e-mails, use less paper and invest in appliances that use less energy.
Not everything can last forever, and that includes me. Please don’t speed up the process. This is just a warning that trouble may be ahead if you don’t change your ways. Only you can solve my problems and I want you to be aware of what you have done and how you can help. I know you do not want to contaminate me, but some people still are. I love how everyday you are putting more thought into conserving my resources. I do appreciate what you have done so far. I cannot prevent you from doing anything, but I want you to consider how you’re actions are affecting me. Next time, think about your great grandchildren. I know you do not want to see them suffer. Don’t you want them to see my natural beauty and experience the same things you have?

Good Luck,
Nature

Letter from a mother to her unborn baby (4)

Dear Baby,

Wherever you go, whatever you do,
I will always be there for you
In just a few weeks you will be due
And our family will be brand new
I’m so excited I can hardly wait
Please be on time and don’t be late
I can’t wait to hold you close to me
Never forget to be the best you can be
Just thinking about you makes me smile
I dreamed of you from the day I walked down the aisle
I start each day singing a song
I think about you all day long
Everything you do fills my heart with joy,
Just know, you will always be my little boy
You will be shown endless care and affection
We want to lead you only in the right direction
Follow your dreams, keep your head up high
Never give up, give everything a try
When I see you, my eyes will have tears of delight
My prayers will be answered every night
I know my life will never be the same
I hope yours is filled with fortune and fame
I will always be there cheering you on
I’ll dream about you from dusk until dawn
You don’t always have to be the best
I will always be impressed
I will show you nothing but love
You are my little angel from up above

Your new mommy Y

Letter to yourself from yourself ten years ago (3)

Dear Genevieve,

I can’t wait to see myself in ten years!!!!! I bet I look the same. Do I look the same? I hope so. I can’t really spell, so mom’s helping me. How are Juliette and T.J.? Does T.J. play baseball? Is Juliette doing cheerleading? Are you both still doing ballet? We just got home from ballet. I really like it. It’s fun. Are you still friends with Stephanie and Allyson? There really nice. We promised to be best friends forever. Did you ever get a puppy?!?!?! I want one so bad! I know I could take care of it real good. It would be so fun to play with. Mommy and Daddy said we’re moving soon. I don’t want to move though, I like living in Westford. We have a big yard. We’re going to Waltham. I don’t know where that is, but I think it’s really really really far. Me and Juliette are going to a new school. It’s catholic. That means we wear uniforms. I think it’s the same school my friend Kristin goes to. T.J. is going to start preschool soon too. Oh my goodness I almost forgot! Can you drive yet?! That would be soooooo awesome! You could go like anywhere you wanted all by yourself! I don’t know how much has changed in ten years. It seems like a really long time from now. I think you’ll still like some of the same things. I can’t imagine not loving pizza, ice cream, and princess movies.

XOXOXOXOOXOXOXOXO

Love, Me =)

Letter from your pet to you (2)

Dear Gen,
You’re the best owner a dog could ever ask for! You probably wouldn’t expect a letter from me, but I thought it would be a great way to tell you how I feel. This is probably the only time you’ll get a letter from me, so I hope you like it.
I love all you do for me. You give me treats, you take me for long walks, and you give me baths. When I’m crying at my food bowl or at the door and it seems like no one hears me, you always come. I’m sorry when I annoy you though. I don’t mean to. When I bark really loud when you’re sleeping it’s because I want to protect you. When I beg for food at your feet it’s because I’m hungry. How would you like eating the same food for breakfast and dinner? When I cry next to your bed early in the morning it’s because I’m so excited to see you. I can’t wait to start my day with you. I get lonely when you are at school. I miss you, and there is no one to play with.
I love summer because that’s when I get to see you the most. You take me to the beach, even though I’m not allowed. I was scared when we got yelled at, but we just kept on walking. I’m sorry for going into the bushes and giving you poison ivy. That won’t happen ever again. I promise. It’s almost winter. I like winter too. Our house always gets very cold, which means more cuddling. Even though I’m little, I’ll try to keep you nice and warm. I like the white blanket the best because it’s the softest.
I hope you’re having chicken for dinner tonight. It’s my favorite and mom gives me your leftovers. I get so excited! If you have rice though, please don’t drop any. Sometimes it falls on my head and gets stuck in my fur.
I like it when you laugh at me. Do you like it when I prance, when I play with my toys, or when I slide across the hard wood floor? I like seeing you happy, because when you’re happy, I’m happy too. You share everything with me. I’m so good at keeping secretes. I never know what you’re saying, but I like listening to you. I’ll always be there for you and I’ll agree with everything you say. When you come home and it seems like everyone is mad at you, I’ll still be there wagging my tail. I will always love you the same no matter what you do. I wish I could say more, but I think I hear the fridge opening so I have to go.
Love, Brady
P.S.
I love wearing my Tom Brady jersey, but please don’t make me wear boots and the coat with the fur hood this winter.

Letter Thanking a Coach (1)

Dear Mr. Shiner,

You always believed in us. You never gave up on us, even when we could barely win a game. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication. It takes a lot of patience to put up with twenty teenage girls. We appreciate all the time and effort you put in to make our team better. We would not be successful if you were not there to encourage and motivate us. You continually remind us that the score does not matter, as long as we do our best. When we feel like giving up, you always push us to work harder.

At the time, running an extra lap or doing an extra 20 sit-ups may seem like a challenge, but you never make us do something we are not capable of. We should be thankful we ran to practie and will be rewarded in the end. You do everything with us, and are constantly cheering us on. We may not be the best team, but we are always trying. Even though we make mistakes, we are playing our hearts out. Mistakes are a good thing because we are able to learn and grow from them.

You have taught us to always be determined, and we can do anything we put our minds to. If we want something bad enough, and are willing to work for it, we can achieve it. You have taught us more than just soccer. You have taught us the value of teamwork, how to win and lose graciously, the importance of commitment, and good sportsmanship. We must always play “pretty soccer.” You also taught us to always believe in yourself. Don’t give up if you shoot and miss. There will be plenty more opportunities to succeed.

I always look forward to going to soccer practice because I know it will be fun. We always have a good time, even when we complain. We love and appreciate hearing your songs at community gathering. You always put so much creativity and thought into them. Your crazy promises like wearing a bow if we beat Pope John and getting a tattoo if we make it to states, make me laugh. Our team has come a long way in the past three years. The first day of practice we all had hopes of making the state tournament. With your leadership and guidance, we did it, we’re going to states!

Thanks for everything,
Genevieve

Forgiveness

Dear Gen,

Mom and Dad always taught us that the most important things in life are family and faith. Without these we have nothing. “A sister is an extension of yourself, without, you are not complete.” Sometimes I take you for granted. I know you’ll always be there for me, and I’ll always be there for you.

Once in a while, we both forget this though. I know you don’t mean what you say most of the time, but when you scream at me for pulling your hair too tight, or you yell at me for wearing your skirt, it hurts . If I take a pair of shoes or a skirt that is “yours,” take it as a compliment, because I want to look as good as you. If I pull your hair too tight, it is because I want you to look perfect. It hurts my feelings when you scream at me. I forgive you though, because I know you don’t mean what you say. You always do this when you are frustrated with something else. Right after you yell at me, you apologize, and I will always forgive you.

Sometimes I think we get in fights because we are too much of the same person. We both have our mother’s eyes and our father’s Irish temper. We hate to be wrong and always think we’re right. When you give me dirty looks or you yell at me I find it insulting. I don’t want you to be mad if I ever correct or criticize you. Being the oldest, I know what you and T.J. are capable of. I love watching your games and I love seeing you do well. I want you to work as hard as you can because I know you will be successful.

Do you remember when we were little and we were getting ready to go to swimming lessons? You shut the front door on your toe and screamed at me for it. Gen, I promise, I did not want there to be blood all over the floor and to see you cry. I wasn’t even there; I was waiting for you in the car. Do you remember those times when we would be doing something we knew we weren’t suppose to, like jumping on our beds, and as soon as mom or dad walked in you would immediately point your finger at me and say, “It was all her idea, I swear!” Looking back I laugh at those times, I forgive you. We were always taught that if we make a mistake it is okay, as long as we learn from it. I know you have learned from all the little mistakes you made.

We have so many memories that I’ll treasure forever. Everything from making pancakes early on Saturday mornings to singing and dancing for everyone. We share each other’s joys and sorrows. We laugh, we cry, and we argue together. We’ve driven everyone in the house crazy with our fights, but that won’t happen again. Our arguments always end in laughter. You try so hard to be right, but you always end up saying something that has nothing to do with the argument. A little laughter definitely solves everything.

If you are mad or upset, I want you to tell me why, and I can help you. Don’t immediately accuse me, or say that I don’t care or wouldn’t understand. We always finish each other’s sentences, and I’ve known you for your whole life. What makes you think I wouldn’t understand? “A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.”

I can’t imagine not having a sister. When it seems like the world doesn’t understand, you always do. Two more things mom and dad always taught us were to never go to bed angry and everyday is a new day. One of the things I like best about us, is our ability to forgive each other. We never dwell on the past, we like to move on. I could never be mad at you; I love you and always will. Gen, always remember we are sisters first, but friends forever.

XOXOXO
Love, Juliette

Endings to my Intros

1.) I guess there are some things in life I will never understand.
You learn something new every day. There are a lot of things in life that don’t make sense to me and probably never will. For example, I don’t understand why material goods are so important to people, why people do things that are illegal, or how people can fall in and out of love so easily. One thing that will never make sense to me is why people put others down just to make themselves feel better. Hopefully, people forget and move on when someone insults them. However, this is not always the case.

2.) Things like that don’t usually happen to people like me.
When, I saw my mother’s eyes filled with tears, I knew something was wrong. We lost a classmate when we were only in second grade. It is hard to say goodbye to your friend especially someone your age when you are only eight. He had a brain tumor. At the time I was confused and didn’t really understand what was happening. Not until several years later did it affect me. He used to say, “I can’t wait until tomorrow because it is a new day.” We wore bracelets as a reminder that every day is a gift and life is precious.

3.) Why are some people perfect at everything they do?
I know nobody is perfect, but some people are pretty close. Being the middle child in my family, I have always been compared to my older sister, Juliette, and my younger brother T.J. They are intelligent, sweet, friendly, athletic, and outgoing. I always hear, “Gen, why do you have to be so difficult? It seems like everything just comes easy to them. It can be frustrating, but I have worked so much harder in life because of them.

4.) I can’t believe she just did that! Slamming the door on my face, after all I did for her.
I went to school with her since I was six. We use to be friends. Something changed though. I’m not sure when or what happened, but things were different. I played soccer with her and I helped her with her school work. I even helped her get into the high school she wanted. This didn’t matter anymore. She thought I was a terrible person who didn’t have anything better to do with my time then to insult her. When I attempted to apologize, “I’m so sorry for the misunderstanding, I hope….” I heard a slam, and she never let me finish. I’ve seen her since then, but things will never be the same between us.

5.)“We did it!” No one thought we were good enough. It only took three minutes to prove them wrong.
Many people would argue that cheerleading is easy and anyone can do it. That is not true. Our cheerleading team practiced for four months two hours every night. Our coaches would scream every practice to smile more, jump higher, sharper motions, and cheer louder. We cheered for every football game, but the competitions were what we looked forward to. It was a chance to show everyone what we could do. We have all been kicked in the face, fallen on our heads, and cheered until we were blue in the face. Our hard work paid off, when I heard everyone scream, “We did it!” We were national champions.

Finishing Intros

(1) "Zzzzzzz." My cell phone was vibrating in my pocket. I took it out at once since I was waiting for her message for so long. I was eager and timid to read it, because i did not want to see anything I did not expect to know. However, the screen showed three words which pushed me into the darkness, "I am sorry..." All the rumors were true. I thought she was my best friend. Our friendship used to be based on honesty, loyalty, and trust, but she lied to me. It was as if she went against everything our friendship stood for. Maybe I should forgive her, but I don’t think I can. I know everyone makes mistakes, but is it okay for your best friend to stab you in the back on purpose? I don’t think so.

(2) She lowered her head, the tears dropped silently, no cry, but just lament.
She was the strongest person I knew. She could handle anything. Why was she so sad? She didn't say anything, but I knew what happened. Her eyes told me everything.

(3) Turn off the light, open the window, set the ipod to the largest volume, I sat on the windowsill and was intoxicated in the peaceful and deadly silent night. It doesn't take a lot to make me happy. I had everything I ever wanted. It was one of those days that starts out awful and ends up better than you can imagine. When you think things can’t get any worse, your luck starts to change. I realized I could be anywhere in the world and still be happy. All I need are the people I love. With my favorite song playing, I felt a cool breeze on my face as I counted the stars thinking about my day. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

(4) "Next!" I stood up suddenly, rubed my hand with my pant to get rid of my sweat, pretending also to get rid of my nervousness. I waited for what seemed like an eternity. This was my chance to shine. I looked around and saw nothing but blank stares. I opened my mouth to sing, but nothing came out. Why did I have to be so nervous? I practiced for hours. I then saw my mother’s face smiling at me. Everything was going to be all right.

(5) "Fine, I do not care!" I yelled at him, turned around, walked away and left him at that spot. However, my tears rushed out at the right moment I turned around. He was overwhelmed by the guilt of remorse; “I am sorry…” his voice was so low that I could hardly hear it. I didn't think three little words could make me cry. Was I not good enough for him anymore? We were perfect together, what went wrong? He meant everything to me, but I meant nothing to him. That was the first time my heart was broken. My world crashed and shattered into tiny pieces. Nothing would be the same ever again.

Unflattering Aspects

My freshman year after soccer was over I was excited to play basketball. I had played before, so I was put on the varsity team. Our coach is very loud and likes to yell. I didn’t think this would bother me so much, because I’ve played several sports before and I had many coaches who yelled. However, being a freshmen and new to the team, his approach was difficult to deal with. Being screamed at for two hours a day, six days a week, lowered my self-esteem and stressed me out.
Immediately after basketball practice my sister, Juliette, and I would rush to dance class for two and a half hours. Basketball practice always ended late and as a result we were always late to dance. Once we got there we would be yelled at, again, for being late. As I jumped into class, I would be way behind everyone else and have no idea what I was doing. We would then get home close to 9:00. Being exhausted and hungry, we would still have to do all our homework. I was so stressed I always took my frustration out on others. Even though I was annoyed, I tried to act like everything was fine. I said so many things I shouldn’t have, but at the time I didn’t care. Juliette had the same responsibilities as I did, and she was able to stay calm and happy.
I was so tired, I had a hard time focusing at practice the next day. I did not want to be there, and it showed through my negative attitude. Being negative, I got yelled at even more and sat on the bench. I wanted to play more, but it didn’t bother me that much because I was only a freshman, I made a lot of mistakes, and I was always confused.
The next year, I figured basketball would be a lot better because I was a sophomore and I knew what to expect. The coach continued to scream and I got just as annoyed as I did the year before. (I have since learned that not all coaches give positive reinforcement and I have to deal with that.) Whenever I got yelled at, I would just give up and act like I didn’t care anymore. I lost all confidence and as a result I never played in the games. I was intimidated by everyone, and I feared that if I did something wrong I would be looked down upon by the coach and my teammates. I would be yelled at if I shot and I would be yelled at if I didn’t shoot. My lack of confidence eventually resulted in not playing at all and getting demoted to the JV team. I had more fun and confidence in the JV games, but I felt like I was not good enough. The coach told me not to think of it as a demotion, but it still felt that way. My lack of confidence made me feel insecure and pessimistic. I complained the whole practice and gave up way too easily. I now understand that criticism is not to be taken personally, but is there to learn from.
